A family owned property development group that has been consistently delivering enduring, quality building assets to the Melbourne community for over 45 years, the Buxton Group was established in 1968 by Richard Buxton, and is owned and managed by Richard and his daughter, Samantha Buxton.

With a passion for innovative design, the Buxton Group is renowned for excellence in the residential, retail and retirement sectors of the Melbourne property market.

Over time the group has evolved its core capabilities to include property development, joint venture partnerships, project financing and retirement village management.

Quality, timeless architecture, and profitability – these are the foundations upon which the Buxton Group has built five decades of property industry success.

From humble beginnings in 1968 involving residential renovations and extensions to luxury housing, the Buxton Group graduated quickly to multi villa unit housing projects.

After diversifying into property development during the 1970s to complement the construction business, the Buxton Group completed a vast variety of financially successful residential and commercial projects.

By the 1990s, the company was involved in building and developing large-scale developments, such as the $150m Anchorage residential apartments in Port Melbourne and Becton’s Fawkner Towers commercial building on St Kilda Road. Also enjoying Buxton’s commitment to quality were hotel projects such as Werribee Mansion and 100 Exhibition Street, as well as housing subdivisions such as Moonah Links Golf Club in Rye and the redevelopment of historical Delgany at Portsea.

In the early 2000s, the Buxton Group commenced development of Rylands – a collection of independent retirement apartment projects in Brighton, Kew and Hawthorn. Buxton Group sold the management rights of Rylands of Kew and Hawthorn to Stockland in 2007, but the Buxton Group retains the management of Rylands of Brighton.

By 2008, Buxton Property, the development arm, was operating autonomously from Buxton Construction, and the following year the construction business was sold after 41 years in family control. More recently, the Buxton Group has extended its portfolio of investments by joint venture partnering and entering mezzanine finance arrangements with like-minded developers through its new arm Buxton Group Finance.

The next decade promises new markets for our specialised development business, building on a strong capital base with an excellent internal rate of return for the Buxton Group’s capitalisation and that of our joint venture partners.

Richard Buxton

Chairman & Managing Director

Managing Director, Richard Buxton, established the Buxton Group in 1968 and is located in Melbourne. Richard’s depth of professional knowledge and understanding of the property market and development process is proven by his unblemished record for operating successfully during fluctuating economic times. He is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Builders.

Samantha Buxton

Joint Managing Director

Located in Melbourne, Samantha Buxton is a Director of the Buxton Group and together with Richard is jointly responsible for the investment strategy and profitability of the Group. Samantha represents the next generation of the family business bringing 14 years of industry experience to the Group, particularly in property marketing and sales. She holds a Bachelor of Science and is a Licenced Estate Agent.

Nolan Stevens

Chief Financial Officer

Buxton Group CFO, Nolan Stevens, is a Chartered Accountant who joined the Buxton Group in 2008 and has seen the evolution of the Buxton Group from the divestment of the core Construction business to its transformation to a pure property developer. Nolan is responsible to the Group’s board for all financial and general management of operations of the diversified interests of the company and works with our key partners in delivering successful projects.

The Buxton Group boasts its own unique development team specialising in conceptual design, planning, finance and development management, as well as outstanding support from independent project managers.


Buxton Group Finance was established in 2011 in order to fund its own developments and joint venture projects, as well as to provide capital solutions to third party developers to enable successful project outcomes.


Buxton Group Retirement has over a decade of experience in the development and management of retirement communities in Melbourne. The Group established the Rylands retirement brand – a collection independent living apartments.

Past Projects

Our extensive experience spanning over 40 years in the construction industry has afforded us valuable skills that contribute to the entire development process. The construction business was sold in 2009 but remains an important part of our property portfolio.
